Customer requirements
Sandy Secondary School in Bedfordshire aimed to incorporate additional sports facilities on its premises. This initiative was part of the schools transformation project and aligned with their ambitious goals for enhanced provision.
During the consultation, they requested a floodlit 3G all-weather sports pitch. This required the construction of a synthetic turf football pitch – including full excavation, sub-base, drainage, installation of fencing and surfacing.
Carrying out the work
To begin the installation, we carried out clearance works on their existing car park and prepared the sub-base. We then installed drainage, kerbs, fencing and lighting before completing with a tarmac and synthetic turf surfacing.
Excavation and Sub-Base
Clearance works to the existing car park. Excavated 3000m2 and disposed from site.
Laid geotextile membrane. Covered with over 200mm of Type 3 permeable sub-base.
Drainage
Installed lateral drainage including catch pits and main connections.
Kerbs
PCC edgings installed to the perimeter of the new pitch.

Sports Fencing
Supplied and installed 3m high Twin Bar Super Rebound Fencing.
Surfacing
Laser-paved a 10mm open texture base course at 50mm thick in preparation of the synthetic surface.
The best solution
We worked closely with the customer in the early stages of the project to ensure that their requirements were met. The proposed solution was for our team to carry out the full works for the 3G pitch – from excavation to surfacing, including associated works.
The final result
Sandy Secondary School is delighted with result of their new sports facility. Their students now benefit from playing sports all year round due to the weather resistant design. And due to the added benefit of floodlights, the pitch is able to be used for longer periods of time.
This low-maintenance sports facility has provided Sandy Secondary school with an excellent new sports facility that has further strengthened their aspirational provision.
