Groundwork and Surfacing Projects

Surfacing and Drainage Solutions for Heavy Machinery

Customer requirements

Startin Tractors, based in Twycross, Warwickshire asked for a sustainable drainage system (SuDS) to be installed due to ground issues on site. They requested a permeable material to help resolve the issues as well as a suitable and durable surface to withstand heavy vehicles.

“We approached MAC Groundwork Contractors to create a strong smooth yard area that could cope with heavy machinery with free drainage through the block paving.”

The best solution

After discussing the project requirements, we suggested using permeable block paving for the best solution along with a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS). A quotation was then provided for 3300m2 of block paving and 138m2 of tarmac surfacing with a SuDS.

We asked Project Manager Dave Cooper why they chose to work with us.

“We trusted MAC Groundwork Contractors to carry out this project due to their extensive expertise and relevant project experience. The price was also within our budget.”

Carrying out the work

The work involved block paving and tarmacking the area surrounding their offices and workshop building. This was carried out by our SuDS and tarmac teams to ensure a professional, high-quality finish. We also involved tarmac technical teams to ensure that we used the most suitable material available. This was due to the tractor yard being consistently used by heavy vehicles.

Drainage and Civils

– Installed a SUDS drainage system, which involved full excavation of works. Holes were drilled into the existing area every 750mm to enable drainage through the permeable surface. These were filled with 6mm angular aggregate. A type 3 stone was then used for the base works.

Groundworks and Surfacing

– Laid a permeable tarmac base course. It was agreed we would use a 20mm dense binder course, drilling holes every 500mm and fill with gravel for maximum strength.

– Installed 50mm grit sand and laid 80mm block pavers, supplied in different colours to demarcate the required surface areas.

The final result

“We are extremely satisfied with the solution provided by MAC Groundwork Contractors and the yard has turned out exactly how we wanted. The work was carried out quickly and smoothly. Nothing was too much trouble if we had a queries.”
